The Last Smart Nail in the Coffin......

The most conservative economic magazine on the planet has just endorsed Barack Obama.

The Economist of London.

The Economist is pro-globalization, anti-regulation, pro-free markets.......

And pro Obama.

I have been working on a long letter to my Kind Christian friends.....who are voting McCain because they are pro-Life.....and for some demented reason are voting for a guy who spends less time in churches than me..... over a declared born-again Christian.

You are dissing a guy who actually goes to church with his first wife and his actual children every Sunday......over a guy who only goes to church if there are cameras, or if the choir girls are really hot and his second wife is out of town at a beer convention with her daddy.

I have been reading the Economist since 1970, when I first hit England. It was already a hundred years old at that point.....and given to rational, dour, scientific and calm analysis of any given situation.....regardless of the politics.

If the Economist endorses Obama.....and you are still a McCain person and not a Kind Christian.....it means, I am very sorry to break this to you......

You are fucking stupid.

The most conservative newspaper in the world is supporting the centrist black guy over your fuddy-duddy with the dipshit squeaker side-kick.

My dark side would ask you to shoot yourself and save our precious gene-pool the affront of your obviously polluted DNA....but this is a kinder, gentler world. We are supposed to be inclusive and diverse.

And we are catering the McCain victory party on Tuesday.

I would rather ask you to actually go to a computer, or a library.....and check some actual facts about the candidate's positions.

Or go to the Economist.

One guy has a plan.....the other guy is trying to extend his priapic schoolboy run through our most sacred institutions and values. Why he dragged perfectly intelligent Republican folks with him is beyond me, and worthy of study by someone smart.

No wonder David Foster Wallace hung himself. Really. That is not a flip remark.

I am sorry if the black guy scares you.

Sometimes wisdom comes in strange packages.

Hey....the Three Wise Guys were black, Asian and Semitic.....and it worked for Jesus.

That was some serious Change.

Here is the Economist's conclusion:

He has earned it

So Mr Obama in that respect is a gamble.

But the same goes for Mr McCain on at least as many counts, not least the possibility of President Palin.

And this cannot be another election where the choice is based merely on fear. In terms of painting a brighter future for America and the world, Mr Obama has produced the more compelling and detailed portrait.

He has campaigned with more style, intelligence and discipline than his opponent. Whether he can fulfil his immense potential remains to be seen.

But Mr Obama deserves the presidency.

What I don't understand is how a guy who is 1/2 black and 1/2 white gets labeled as "black?" And even by you, whom I greatly admire as among the thinking gene pool?

Why is he not white? Why black? And even more disconcerting, why isn't anyone talking about this characterization?

What does that say about our racist state of the nation?

Just wondering, down here in Big Sur.

The problem is..mixing politics and religion..or the liberals don't have both so they have melded into The One.
Christians are not looking for a messiah. The adoring crowds flocking to the rallies are disquieting.
Politicians are tax collectors, not world saviors.
The Americans traditionally have expected stump speeches to be about taxes and how those monies are spent..not about saving the world or uniting or other feel good suave demogoguery.
Americans should know the difference between taxes and tithes; political speeches and sermons; politicans and messiahs; legal and moral.
America is a unique country, not a country where government is threatened and abused by mobs and the mobs are beaten down by jack booted thugs of any political persuasion.
Adoring crowds should make everyone very uneasy. Americans render unto Caesar that which is Caesars and render unto God that which is God's, or they used to. And ..in the good old days, they knew the difference.

To answer south coast kate, Plessy (of Plessy v. Ferguson, 1896) was only 1/8 African, yet considered "black." Many states embraced the "one drop rule," which held that even one drop of African blood made one "black."

So THAT is why Obama is considered "black" in our society. Simple historical legacy. Is it right? Ask again when, and if, racism dies in the U.S.

Adoring Devotees
Believers
Exciting
Retribution Revenge
Adoration for a Tax Collector?
The Great Avenger:
The country has been fractured by the politics of resentment. Everyone wants retribution, reparations and revenge.
Obama does promise that..for a change..What is unclear is what that retribution, reparation and revenge will be. It is clear against whom the revenge will be exacted.

In 1970..a divorced woman with 3 children made 80 cents an hour as a waitress. She could afford house payments, car/fuel and blue cross coverage for her family. A friend told me that in 1970 college tuition at San Jose State was $170 a semester.
Now..California is going bankrupt over medical and education costs but..this blogger states and Obama promises that Americans will be given, by his government, an opportunity for affordable health care and college.
What is wrong with this picture? Obama is promising to return to you today what a fraction of what you had 30 or 40 years ago..at the cost of over 40% of your income and everyone is believing and cheering?
Weird!

Hmmm... seems like you are doing exactly what others on the right are doing - not answerin' the question. Just in case you've forgotten, the question was: "what about the adoring crowds at Sarah Palin rallies? Have you forgotten those?" Why are you chosing not to answer the question?

Oh, another thing you might have forgotten or perhaps you chose to forget - we (that would be the USA) had a balanced budget when Bush took office 8 years ago. Did that one slip your mind too? Do you have a clue how much gas was 8 years ago?

The answer is..I don't see much adoration of Sarah Palin from anyone..
Also I know exactly what the price of gas/fuel is to the penny every single day 24/7. Have you considered the "gas crunch" had nothing to do with Iraq..why after 4 -/+ years? Or US foriegn policy..That might be a strategy to force the US to go green? To cut green house emissions?
I run a successfull small business.
Balancing the books by printing money, robbing the highway trust fund and cooking the books per Clinton is Not going to solve the problems.
Maybe someone can tell me why "Public Works Projects" in a nation that has a Labor Shortage and must import Labor..Legally and Illegally.
BTW..Did you notice the printing of 5 trillion dollars? Republicans are borrowing a page from the Dems and leaving office with the largest budget surplus in history..
It is called HyperInflation..

SC Kate:

I go with Obama's self-description. He and I were both born in Hawaii, which is both a great melting pot....and a place where everyone keeps score of racial subtleties.

Hawaii is the mirror image of the Mainland.....the more Filipino, native Hawaiian, whatever non-invasive species you had, the cooler you were.

I was a kamaaina....a honky, but born in Hawaii. My grandpops was the Marine Surveyor for the Islands, so he was cool....and he spoke Pidgin. My grannie was small and dark skinned, and passed as a native. This gave me a enough cool....just enough.

By the way...for locals....Kent at the Cheese Shop in Carmel Plaza went to Punahou with Barack, who was then known as Barry.

Punahou is the most exclusive prep school in Hawaii. It was founded back in the 1830's with an orginal grant from Hawaiian royalty....and has been multi-cultural from the get-go. It is probably one of the few places on the planet where diversity is not only practiced, but celebrated.....albeit in a weird, Alice-through-the-looking-glass kind of reverse, positive, inclusionary....racism? Celebrate our differences? I have no doubt that Barack's experience at Punahou is central to much of what has followed in his character and beliefs.

In Barack's speech in Iowa yesterday he talked about the American dream and his faith in America and the American dream being vindicated: "When a skinny black kid from Chicago can dream......"

On the other hand...anyone who has graduated from both Harvard and Punahou is culturally and practically in a completely different universe than you, I, Spike Lee, and Michael Moore.

And thank God for that.

Barack is black in my world. Black is beautiful. I am Irish. An Phoblacht Abu.

We are both Americans....let's get over this crap and move on.
